As a mom with two young children, living in Maine has been a truly magical experience, especially since we like spending time outdoors. Maine is home to so many natural wonders, and one of those is Great Pond, located in my hometown, right here in Cape Elizabeth. Also, my brother lives right on the pond, so it’s a great excuse to go see him 🙂

Great Pond is a sprawling wetland that spans over 100 acres and is surrounded by woods. It’s home to a diverse range of wildlife, making it a popular destination for nature lovers. You can enjoy tons of outdoor activities at Great Pond, like hiking, canoeing, and nature walks. In the winter, the pond freezes over, turning it into the best ice skating and ice fishing anywhere.

Great Pond’s history is just as captivating as its natural beauty (well, not quite, but still interesting). Originally privately owned, the pond was once used primarily for harvesting ice during the winter months. However, in the 1980s, the town of Cape Elizabeth acquired the land and opened it up to the public. Since then, Great Pond has become a beloved destination for both locals and tourists alike. It offers breathtaking views and a peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts to explore and relax.
