Winter in Maine can be a magical time of year, with snowflakes falling softly from the sky and blanketing the landscape in a peaceful, pristine white. But for most kids in Maine, the highlight of the winter season is a snow day – a day when school is canceled!

I typically dread the text from the school saying that school is canceled because it means I have to rework my entire day to account for kids being home from school. But, on this particular morning, I looked outside and saw that the world was blanketed in a fresh layer of snow, and knew that this was going to be a special day.

After a hot breakfast of pancakes and bacon, we got dressed in our warmest winter gear and headed over to Purpoodock Golf Club in Cape Elizabeth. Purpoodock is a perfect spot for sledding, cross-country skiing or even just hiking through the miles of trails. Today, the snow was perfect for all of that. It was knee-deep in some places, but it was light as air so it was easy to get around and it didn’t hurt if you took a digger 🙂

A perfect snow day in Maine like this is a rare and precious thing, and I’m so grateful to have spent it together as a family. Whether you’re sledding, hiking, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of a winter’s day, a snow day in Maine is the perfect opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime.
